Wet Felt meets Eco Printing Bootcamp

Meet Nicola,

Sustainable textile artist and author of the 'Eco Printing in the Dirty Pot' e-book

Three words describe Nicola Brown’s textile practice; simple, natural, and crafted. She harnesses the natural dye in leaves, onion skins, seed pods, and bark to create lasting prints and colour on handmade felt, wool, linen, and silk. This is achieved in a health-conscious and environmentally mindful way without using any harsh chemicals.

Since starting to develop a sustainable way of working Nicola has planted over 13500 trees on her property and laid out large dye borders. These support a diverse selection of butterflies, insects, birds, and mammals which help convey the wider ecological aspect of her practice.

Now that I’ve covered the foundations of felting to print and eco printing to felt I am going to move on to a very exciting topic, sculptural felt!

Questions about how to works with resists to create sculptural felt, how to prepare it for printing, how to lay out vegetation to achieve the best effects etc., etc. will all be covered.

Please don’t stress if you are a novice felter and none of this makes any sense to you now, hopefully it will after you have joined me this evening!

We will continue where we left off yesterday diving deeper into the wet felting to print and eco printing to felt discussion. I will also share plenty of images. Again I will be happy to answer your questions live so please make sure to drop them into the chat so that others may benefit from the answers too.

If you’ve not already watched session 1 I highly recommend doing so before this evening. Each day of the bootcamp builds on the information and knowledge shared from the day before, in this way total beginners can follow.

Today it’s all about keeping things simple. Because there is so much information about eco printing and wet felting flying around on the internet it’s often difficult to get the the root of the issue and know where to start.

If you are new to these processes or already have experience in one or both techniques but aren’t happy with your results this session is a must! My intention is to cut to the chase and share some of my top wet felting and eco printing in the ‘dirty pot’ tips tonight.

We will start a dialog together about the differences between felting to print and eco printing to felt then tomorrow night continue with this discussion. I’m excited and hope that you are too!
